Removing spent flowers

A faded flower can be removed without cutting healthy buds.

What to look for

Find a flower that has finished blooming and trace its own stalk. Look for nearby unopened buds or a healthy leaf connection before cutting; some plants are kept for their seeds instead.

What to do

When deadheading suits the plant, snip the spent flower stalk just above an appropriate leaf or branch point. Leave unopened buds intact and stop if you cannot tell which stalk belongs to the flower.
