Tiny jumping insects in soil

Springtails usually feed on decaying material, not healthy plants.

What to look for

These tiny white or gray creatures may jump when watered or disturbed and are common in damp potting mix. They are often mistaken for pests and rarely harm healthy indoor plants.

What to do

If their numbers bother you, let the surface dry as much as the plant tolerates and remove decaying debris. Check drainage and avoid keeping the mix unnecessarily wet; insecticide is usually unnecessary.
